Google’s Pixel line has recently seen a slew of new camera enhancements, predominantly featuring AI-assisted post-processing improvements. The introduction of Made You Look at the Made by Google 2024 event on Tuesday marks a notable shift. This feature delves into photography’s rich legacy to leverage an age-old technique: coaxing a smile out of reluctant youngsters.
Certainly, the realm of AI provides tools like Best Take to aid in capturing the perfect moment. However, they lack a certain spark of joy. Inspired by the timeless efforts of weary parents who resort to silly antics and props to elicit a grin from their children, Made You Look employs animated characters to achieve more engaging photographs.
This innovation will debut on the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro Fold, set for release next month, specifically catering to foldable smartphones. It ingeniously utilizes the external display of the device to entertain and capture the attention of subjects as photos are taken.
“Activate this function, open up the camera, and an attention-grabbing animation — such as a vibrant yellow chicken — will appear on the outer display,” states Google. “This playful animation not only delights but also keeps youngsters focused, allowing for the perfect photo opportunity.”
Google plans to expand this feature by incorporating recognizable characters, starting with Joy, voiced by Amy Poheler, from Pixar’s beloved “Inside Out” franchise.
