Google Introduces AI-Driven Innovations for Image Editing and Creation

by admin

During the Made by Google 2024 event on Tuesday, the tech giant unveiled its latest addition to the smartphone market, the Pixel 9 series. These smartphones are not only equipped with the Gemini digital assistant by default but are also brimming with AI-enhanced functionalities.

The tech behemoth has incorporated new photo-editing capabilities, alongside innovative applications designed for efficient storage and retrieval of screenshots directly on the device, in addition to an AI-driven studio dedicated to creating images.

With the introduction of Add Me, capturing group photos without missing the photographer is now easier. Leveraging augmented reality and a variety of machine learning algorithms, the feature suggests that the person taking the initial photo swaps places with another individual. The smartphone then instructs the new photographer on how to reposition for the shot, while AI blends the two images seamlessly, ensuring everyone is included.

Google introduced Magic Editor in the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro series last year, featuring a notable Magic Eraser tool capable of eliminating distractions or undesired subjects from photos. Enhancements to this tool are progressing with the Pixel 9 series introducing two significant updates.

The debut enhancement, auto framing, intelligently readjusts the composition to emphasize the focal elements within the frame. Google promises that Magic Editor will suggest several alternatives for users to choose from. Moreover, this feature can utilize generative AI to broaden the scope of the photograph. According to Google, the second enhancement allows users to specify their desired backdrop for an image, which the AI then proceeds to create.

Innovations in screenshots and studio applications

Google enhances the Pixel 9 series with the introduction of apps for handling screenshots and the Pixel Studio for AI-assisted image creation. The screenshot application not only archives screen captures but also supports searching specific details within them, such as retrieving Wi-Fi information from a holiday residence.

Although Google Photos offers a similar search functionality for locating particulars like license plates or passport numbers, the novel screenshot app operates directly on the device.

Moreover, the new Pixel Studio app facilitates the creation of AI-generated images locally on the device, blending on-device diffusion models with Google’s cloud-based solutions. Users can initiate image generation with any prompt and refine the style through app features. Despite the current inability to produce human faces—likely a precaution after an earlier Gemini mishap—the app’s scope for generating sensitive or inappropriate content remains under review.
