Tuesday morning’s Made by Google 2024 event showcased the unveiling of the Pixel 9 series, introducing the Pixel 9 Fold Pro and offering a new size variant. The lineup comprises the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Matching the base model’s 6.3-inch display, the Pro variant now features enhanced resolution (1280 x 2856 compared to 1080 x 2424). The Pro XL, a refreshed version of last year’s 8 Pro, boasts a 6.8-inch display and a resolution of 1344 x 2992 pixels.
Offering more choices aligns the Pixel 9 series more closely with the diversity found in Apple’s iPhone lineup, especially through the division of Pro models, accommodating those seeking high-end specifications without the bulk. Improved display brightness by approximately 35%, peaking at 2,700 nits, and the incorporation of Gorilla Glass Victus 2 are notable enhancements.
Significantly, the inclusion of Gemini as the default AI, supplanting Google Assistant, stands out. This transition, initialized through a beta program that allowed Pixel 8a users to engage Gemini via the Power button, represents a shift towards leveraging generative AI as the core assistant across the Pixel 9 range.

Those indifferent or skeptical about the new AI feature have the option to revert to Google Assistant. As previously reported, the traditional assistant will continue to be integral for Google Home and Nest environments.
A pivotal redesign in the devices includes sharper edges and a more pronounced camera array at the back. The Pixel 9 is equipped with dual rear cameras, whereas the 9 Pro variants feature a trio. The main device includes a 50-megapixel wide camera and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens, with the Pros adding a 48-megapixel telephoto lens capable of 5x optical and up to 30x Super Res Zoom. For selfies, the Pros boast 42-megapixel cameras.
Google enhances its suite of AI-powered editing tools, introducing ‘Add Me’ for merging group photos with individual shots and upgrading the ‘Magic Editor’ with auto image reframing, cropping suggestions, and image expansion capabilities.
Diverging from Apple, Google equips the entire Pixel 9 series with the Tensor G4 chip, paired with the Titan M2 security module. The Pixel 9 models come with 12GB RAM, offering 128 or 256GB storage, while the Pros support up to 1TB with 16GB RAM. Battery life is robust across the board, with the 6.3-inch models featuring a 4700 mAh battery and the XL variant a 5060 mAh battery, promising up to 24 hours of usage or 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver activated.
The Pro models include a one-year subscription to the Google One AI Premium plan, featuring enhanced Gemini capabilities, integration into Gmail and Docs, and 2TB of cloud storage. Furthermore, all new devices guarantee seven years of OS and security updates, alongside feature additions via Pixel drops.
Starting prices are set at $799 for the Pixel 9, $999 for the Pixel 9 Pro, and $1,099 for the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Preorders commence Tuesday, with the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro XL scheduled for shipment by August 22, while the dispatch date for the Pro remains to be confirmed.
