Twitch Launches Story-Style Video Feature to Take on Instagram

by admin

Expanding its storytelling options, Twitch has recently debuted Video Stories. This new feature enables streamers to create 60-second videos directly within the Twitch mobile application or to upload existing videos from their camera rolls.

This innovation is seen by Twitch as a method for streamers to bring their audience along during travels and times away from their typical streaming environments. Traditionally, streamers have utilized various platforms like Instagram Stories or TikTok to share short-form, behind-the-scenes content. Twitch is now encouraging its content creators to use its own platform for these moments as well.

Originally popularized by Snapchat, the story format has become a staple of almost every major social media and messaging platform today, including Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, among others, including several from emerging startups.

Besides enabling Twitch streamers to engage with their audience on-the-go, the platform views Video Stories as a means for creators to foster deeper connections with their viewers. For example, streamers can pose questions within their videos, encouraging viewers to participate in polls, or use the @mentions feature to acknowledge new subscribers with personalized shout-outs. Video stories also serve as a venue for sharing stream highlights, promoting forthcoming live streams, or updating followers about any changes to the streaming schedule.

By integrating Video Stories, Twitch aspires to provide its content creators a self-contained ecosystem for engaging with their audience, potentially reducing the need for external social media platforms like Instagram for updates and interactions. However, it remains unlikely that top creators will rely solely on Twitch for all their engagement needs.

Although the platform initially launched text and photo stories specifically for mobile use, Twitch has expanded availability to the web application to better accommodate where viewers primarily engage with content on the platform.
