The much-anticipated digital gathering hosted by Elon Musk and Donald Trump on platform X encountered technical difficulties and went offline on Monday afternoon. The dialogue, involving Musk, the platform’s proprietor, and the former U.S. President, was scheduled for 5 pm PT. However, attendees were met with an error message at the scheduled time.
Users attempting to access the Space on X were greeted with a notification indicating that “This Space is not available.”
The event, eagerly awaited and promoted by both Trump and Musk, was set to signify Trump’s reengagement with the platform formerly known as Twitter. Despite a planned start time of 5 pm PT, the “conversation”, as Musk referred to it, did not commence until 5:42 pm PT.
Monday morning saw Trump’s first post on the platform since being banned in January 2021, marking his return. His posts that day varied from promoting the discussion with Musk to campaign promotions and links to his personal website. Over the past three years, Trump’s primary platform has been Truth Social, his own social media venture. Nevertheless, Trump has had the capability to post on X for almost two years, following Musk’s reinstatement of his Twitter account in November 2022, shortly after acquiring the company, now rebranded as X.
Musk suggested that the downtime experienced by the X Space was due to “a massive DDOS attack on X.” According to Musk, the platform had previously tested its capacity to handle 8 million concurrent listeners earlier that day. He linked the alleged DDOS attack – an acronym for distributed denial-of-service, where a network is overwhelmed by excessive traffic – to those opposed to Trump’s messaging.
Musk expressed during the commencement of the Space, “This colossal attack underscores the significant opposition to letting people hear what President Trump has to express. Nonetheless, I am honored to host this dialogue,” he remarked.
The incident wasn’t the first time an X Space experienced technical issues during a politically charged event. In May 2023, technical glitches on Twitter disrupted Ron DeSantis’s 2024 electoral campaign announcement in a session featuring Elon Musk and venture capitalist David Sacks.
