by admin

A notable tragedy has occurred within a well-known Silicon Valley family. The news of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki’s death was confirmed through social media by her spouse, Dennis Troper, and Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai. She was 56 years old.

Troper conveyed on Facebook earlier on Friday, “It’s with immense sorrow that I announce the departure of Susan Wojcicki. My cherished spouse for 26 years and the mother of our five children succumbed today after battling non-small cell lung cancer for 2 years.”

“Susan wasn’t only my soulmate and life partner but also a beacon of intellect, an exceptional mother, and a treasured friend to numerous people. Her contribution to our lives and the global community is beyond measure. While we are devastated, we are appreciative of the moments shared with her. We ask that our family be kept in your prayers during this challenging period.”

Earlier in February of the same year, Wojcicki and Troper faced the devastating loss of their 19-year-old son, Marco Troper, who tragically died from an accidental overdose in his university dorm at the University of California, Berkeley, as a freshman.

Wojcicki was celebrated for her leadership at YouTube, where she served as CEO for nine fruitful years before resigning in early 2023, expressing a desire to focus on her family, health, and personal passions in a blog post at the time.

An early employee of Google, Wojcicki was pivotal in YouTube’s acquisition by Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion, a move regarded as groundbreaking at the time. Remarkably, she was involved with Google’s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, by renting them her Menlo Park, Calif., garage, as they were then Stanford Ph.D. students. Google underwent restructuring in 2015, under which Alphabet was established as its parent company.

It has been reported that upon noticing YouTube’s growing popularity, Wojcicki, working as a marketing manager at Google then, suggested to Page and Brin the purchase of the video streaming service.

Under Wojcicki’s stewardship, YouTube flourished into a multibillion dollar revenue stream for Google. In 2023, YouTube’s ad sales alone brought in $8.1 billion in revenue, accounting for nearly 10% of Alphabet’s overall revenue.

The Wojcicki family is deeply embedded in the Silicon Valley and Bay Area landscape. Wojcicki’s sister, Anne Wojcicki, is the CEO of 23andMe, while another sister, Janet, serves as a professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco. Their mother, Esther Wojcicki, is a distinguished educator known for her writings on raising successful children.
