YouTube Experiments with a Sleep Timer Feature for Premium Users

by admin

YouTube is currently trialing a new addition for its Premium subscribers—a sleep timer that automatically stops playback after a specified duration. While not particularly groundbreaking, this feature is undoubtedly useful for those who enjoy falling asleep to lengthy podcasts or ambient sounds.

Premium members on YouTube can activate this feature by visiting this link on a computer, or by selecting the “Settings > Try experimental new features” route on their mobile devices.

After activation, the Sleep Timer feature appears in the video player’s Settings menu, where users can choose to stop their video after 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, 60 minutes, or once the video concludes.

When the timer triggers a pause in the video, a notification will pop up, giving the option to prolong viewing if desired.

YouTube has been somewhat behind its peers in rolling out this convenience. For example, Spotify has offered a sleep timer for some time, and TikTok began exploring sleep reminders tailored to preset bedtimes last year.

According to YouTube’s page for experimental features, the sleep timer will be accessible until September 2. Many are hopeful that the platform will consider making it a permanent fixture available to all users, including those on the free tier.

Previous innovative endeavors by YouTube include implementing an AI assistant to field video-related inquiries and introducing a lock screen option to prevent inadvertent interactions.
