Instagram Embraces the Trend of ‘Photo Dumps’

by admin

Instagram is enhancing its platform by allowing users the capability to include up to 20 images or videos in their feed carousels, adopting the increasingly popular trend known as “photo dumps.” This is a significant step up from 2017, when Instagram first introduced the option to create a swipeable carousel post with up to 10 items. Now, users have the capacity to share twice as much content in a single post.

Initially, Instagram focused on the concept of sharing that one exemplary photo with your followers. However, over time, the concept of “photo dumps” emerged, where users began to share multiple photos and videos within a single carousel post, moving away from the pressure of selecting just one perfect image.

With the newly doubled limit for photos and videos in carousels, Instagram is timely embracing the photo dump trend as summer draws to a close. This update harks back to the days when people would upload entire albums of summer vacation photos to Facebook, at a time when that platform was at its zenith.

It is interesting to observe that this change narrows the gap between Instagram and TikTok’s capabilities, with the latter offering the option to post up to 35 photos in a single carousel.

Although the update will be welcomed by some, others might view it as excessive, considering Instagram’s evolution from its origins as a straightforward photo-sharing app. The addition of being able to swipe through more than 10 images or videos might not appeal to everyone, especially considering the vast range of other content formats on the app, such as reels, stories, and notes.

The introduction of this expanded limit doesn’t come as a shock, given that Instagram was seen testing this feature in March.

The update was announced on Thursday, following Instagram’s recent reveal that it is prioritizing “Views” as the main metric for all its content types, including reels, live, photos, carousels, and stories. This shift allows creators to monitor a uniform metric across their various types of content.
