Maya Watson and Lexi Nisita, the brains behind the innovative social platform why?!, first crossed paths during their tenure at Netflix. Their connection was instant, marked by shared laughter and a seamless synergy.
Their collaboration flourished in the company’s branding and editorial departments, a testament to their complementary skill sets. “Being Minnesotans, we naturally clicked,” Watson shared.
The journey led them next to Clubhouse, with Watson boarding as the 13th employee and Nisita not far behind as the 20th. Here, they spearheaded the development of the social network’s editorial and brand identity. However, after more than a year, the pair ventured out to embark on a co-founding adventure.
“The office vibe had shifted to something more mundane and less satisfying,” Watson recounted. They set out to change that narrative.
Enter why?!, their latest creation—a hybrid of messaging, networking, and dating functionalities. Their venture has already attracted $1.65 million in pre-seed investment, with Charles Hudson of Precursor Ventures leading the charge, they announced last Wednesday.
This app emerges as a solution to the mounting ‘loneliness epidemic’ described by specialists, offering a bridge to more meaningful human connection.
“In our quest to understand the essence of closeness, we’ve engaged with therapists and psychologists,” Watson said. They underscored the universal yearning for reciprocal, profound, and dependable connections.
Despite the crowded social media landscape, why?! aims to distinguish itself through its emphasis on “simplicity and intimacy.” Currently in private beta, its planned public launch is set for the fall. The app introduces engaging features like question card games for private conversations, daily prompts, video chat capabilities, and weekly updates from users about their activities.
The app’s name is the brainchild of the head of engineering, inspired by the pursuit of open-ended inquiry. “The question ‘why?’ is the root of all deep and meaningful conversations,” Nisita explained.
Watson described the fundraising journey as surprisingly pleasant, praising their diverse and supportive group of investors. “As women and a founder of color, we’re incredibly blessed to have backers who are not just investors but true allies,” Watson added.
Watson views their transition from employees to founders as a thrilling expedition, enriched by their experiences at Clubhouse, which she compares to a startup crash course. “The key is to focus on your mission and the people you serve, a principle driven home by our time at Netflix and its focus on nurturing a positive work culture,” Watson explained.
With a currently modest team size, the company is on the lookout for more engineering talent as it gears up for the official rollout and seeks to expand its user base.
