Bluesky Welcomes Techdirt’s Mike Masnick as Newest Board Member

by admin

In a significant development on Monday, Bluesky, a decentralized social networking initiative challenging mainstream platforms, revealed that Mike Masnick has joined its board. Masnick, the visionary behind the influential Techdirt technology blog and the architect of the “Protocols, not Platforms” concept that inspired Bluesky, brings a wealth of knowledge to the table.

A blog update from the company highlights that Masnick had already been a source of valuable guidance for the team, making his board membership a fitting evolution of their partnership.

Bluesky, initially nurtured within Twitter under the stewardship of founder Jack Dorsey and later established as an autonomous entity post its separation from Twitter (now X, under the helm of Elon Musk), is navigating its journey as an independent entity. This journey includes securing initial funding last year and launching its maiden paid offering that facilitates users in creating custom domains on its decentralized framework.

Despite receiving Dorsey’s endorsement during its formative stage, he later openly voiced concerns about the startup’s repetition of the same oversights encountered by Twitter, particularly in its early moderation challenges.

In May, Dorsey stepped down from Bluesky’s board to devote his energies to Nostr, a decentralized platform gaining traction among Bitcoin enthusiasts, including Dorsey.

With Masnick’s appointment, Bluesky endeavors to enhance its governance, leveraging his insights as it steers the growth of its user base, now at six million, and further refines its platform, policies, and the underlying technology, the AT Protocol.

Bluesky aims to benefit from Masnick’s extensive background in journalism, editing, and publishing along with his deep understanding of policy, tech, and legal intricacies critical to the platform’s expansion.

Bluesky’s CEO Jay Graber remarked, “Mike has been a beacon of inspiration from the beginning for us. His inclusion on our board is a testament to our collective aim for a liberated internet. We’re eager to draw on his wisdom as we progress with the development of Bluesky and the AT Protocol.”

Masnick shared his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m thrilled to contribute to Bluesky’s mission of crafting an open social network. Witnessing the team transform foundational ideas into a tangible platform has been rewarding, and I am keen to assist in driving the evolution of a better internet forward.”
