Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X, on Tuesday declared that an antitrust legal action has been initiated by the social media entity against both the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) and the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA).
In a recently shared video on X, Yaccarino levels accusations at the organizations and specific GARM members like CVS Health, Mars, Orsted, and Unilever, alleging a “systematic illegal boycott” directed at the social platform.
Yaccarino points to a July investigation report by the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, titled “GARM’s (Global Alliance for Responsible Media) Harm,” as supporting evidence.
The report elaborates that GARM, together with big corporations, advertising firms, and industry groups, engaged in boycotts and other collective measures to defund platforms, podcasts, news providers, and other mediums that are not favored by GARM and its affiliates. Such coordinated efforts risk erasing diverse content and opinions accessible to the public.
The formation of GARM by the World Federation of Advertisers in 2019 aimed to “assist the industry in addressing the dilemma of illegal or offensive content on digital media outlets and its advertising revenue,” as per the entity’s webpage.
Specific mention is made in the Judiciary’s document about boycott actions against X, The Joe Rogan Experience/Spotify, and various “Candidates, platforms, and news mediums advocating contrary political ideologies.”
The document also touches on the discord among organization members regarding Elon Musk’s acquisition of what was previously known as Twitter. A proposal was made by one of the members to halt all paid promotions on the platform, an action that led to a significant decline in its earnings.
“‘A meeting arrangement to delve deeper into [GARM’s] viewpoint on the Twitter predicament and a potential mass boycott’ was requested by a member,” cite the report’s creators. Lengthy discussions on Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter were held by GARM, which provided a perfect scenario for organizing the boycott.”
Yaccarino, in her statement, insists that the “unlawful practices of these bodies and their leaders have stripped X of billions in revenue.”
Musk’s reaction was starkly straightforward, stating, “After being courteous for [two] years to no avail, we’re now at war.”
This legal move comes amid tighter government scrutiny over tech monopolies. A notable episode saw Google facing defeat in a major legal tussle accusing the tech behemoth of an illegal search monopoly.
