Meta’s AI endeavors have received a significant boost from WhatsApp’s impressive user base of 500 million in India.
On Wednesday, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted that India has emerged as the biggest user base for Meta AI, an impressive feat considering its recent launch in the country.
Zuckerberg conveyed in the second-quarter earnings discussion that Meta AI has been utilized for billions of queries since its inception.
“The uptake of Meta AI, especially via WhatsApp, has shown notable retention and engagement rates. This is synchronous with India becoming the major arena for Meta AI operations,” Zuckerberg observed.
Initially introduced in the United States last year, Meta AI spans several platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and the wider internet. In April, the chatbot was enhanced with the Llama 3 model and expanded to over twelve countries.
Even though the testing of Meta AI in India commenced around the same period, broad user access was granted only in June, post the conclusion of India’s general elections.
The adaptation of AI to suit the Indian market has presented Meta with unique cultural hurdles. For instance, TechCrunch reported in May that images generated by Meta AI of Indian males predominantly featured them wearing turbans. Further, in July, users on X pointed out that Meta AI produced jokes centered around a specific religion while refraining from doing so for others. Following these inconsistent outcomes, Meta adjusted its algorithm to ensure impartial treatment in humor related to religion.
Recently, Meta broadened its linguistic support beyond English to include languages such as French, German, Hindi, Hindi-Romanized Script, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Presently, Meta AI serves users in 22 nations, with Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico being the latest additions.
Furthermore, Zuckerberg discussed the anticipated computational demand for training the forthcoming Llama 4 model.
“To train Llama 4, we estimate the computational need to be nearly 10 times greater than that for Llama 3, with expectations of future models requiring even more,” he stated during the earnings call.
Beyond AI, Meta’s social platforms show promising developments. The company acknowledged that Threads is nearing 200 million users, having crossed 175 million active users the previous month. Zuckerberg also noted encouraging trends in Facebook’s engagement among young adults in the U.S.
