Google Maps Unveils Fresh Updates Yet Omits the Anticipated ‘Pause Navigation’ Option

by admin

We’ve all been there, caught in the situation where, during a road trip, a detour for snacks or gas has Google Maps aggressively instructing us to return to our route. With all its financial and technological resources, one would hope the app could be more forgiving during such pit stops.

On a hopeful note, Google revealed on Wednesday the integration of two new updates into Maps, sparking a glimmer of optimism that perhaps they had finally addressed this grievance.

Unfortunately, the updates weren’t about allowing users to pause navigation temporarily. Instead, Google has simplified the process of reporting obstacles like constructions, lane closures, and police checks. It’s also enhancing the visibility of the destination, pinpointing the exact entrance of buildings, and indicating nearby parking, which is definitely an improvement for navigating new locations.

Certainly, one workaround, as I discovered from Google’s “AI Overview” while researching solutions, is to manually stop navigation and restart it post intermission. Another approach, recommended by Google’s support community, is to add your stopover as a “waypoint”, preventing the incessant re-routing. Nevertheless, these solutions introduce additional hassle and cognitive load for the driver.

Clearly, I’m not in solitude in desiring such a feature, evidenced by the communal pleas spanning years for Google to implement a pause function. Regrettably, neither Apple Maps nor Waze (also owned by Google) offer this feature.

Considering we’re in Silicon Valley, where vast sums are spent to eliminate minor inconveniences, it’s perplexing why this particular shortfall continues to exist amid an ecosystem designed to streamline virtually every aspect of daily life.
