Goblins Date: The Fresh Dating Service Blending Virtual Courtship With Gaming

by admin

Navigating the world of online dating presents its own set of challenges, particularly for gamers who often identify as introverted or neurodivergent. Date Like Goblins, a dating platform inspired by the concept of “Goblin Mode” – embracing your true self without apology – seeks to make the dating scene more relaxed and enjoyable.

Scheduled for a fall launch, Date Like Goblins targets the gaming community, offering a chance for members to connect over voice chat while immersed in their preferred video games. The platform kicked off its Kickstarter drive on Wednesday, promising early access and discounted memberships for supporters.

Specifically crafted for the introverted, neurodivergent, or autism spectrum community, Date Like Goblins creates a welcoming space for users to engage with potential matches through shared gaming experiences. This virtual dating setup intends to reduce pressure, allowing users to then consider if they want to pursue face-to-face interactions.

With over 250 testers, the beta version of Date Like Goblins offers a user-friendly interface that favors search filters over the common algorithmic and swiping mechanisms seen on many dating apps. Users can customize their search based on age, gender, and preferred video games, including popular titles like Final Fantasy XIV and Stardew Valley.

The service extends beyond dating, providing a platform for gamers seeking friendships or one-off gaming sessions with new acquaintances. Once a connection is made, users can schedule a game session through a Calendly invitation incorporating their Discord details for voice chat and game play.

For now, Date Like Goblins relies solely on Discord for user interaction but may incorporate in-app voice features in the future.

The platform also offers a dashboard for users to manage their gaming appointments and invites, including an “Availability” tab to help schedule games and set notification preferences.

The idea for Date Like Goblins came from Lise Keeney, a passionate World of Warcraft gamer, in the wake of her father’s passing. She sought a more effortless approach to meet people online, which led to the creation of this platform.

Following a path also trodden by other gamer-centric dating startups, Date Like Goblins distinguishes itself by offering three modes for user experience: Normal (Human), Goblin (photo-free), and Halfling (photo revealed only if interest is mutual). However, the lack of photos could foster disparities, although it shifts the focus towards interests and personalities, potentially reducing anxiety in shy users.

This approach mirrors attempts by other dating apps like S’More, which obscured profile photos to foster genuine connections. Nevertheless, the absence of images may elevate risks of deceit and predatory behavior, underlining the importance of caution and public meetings for online daters.

Keeney reveals plans for incorporating ID verification while maintaining a platform aimed at users above 18. She acknowledges the unique challenge in upholding identity without relying on photos, especially in embracing a fully “Goblin Match Mode.”

The lack of NSFW filters poses potential issues, but measures are underway to integrate these while maintaining user safety, especially for women and LGBTQ+ community members. Date Like Goblins expects to implement these safeguards shortly.

Keeney takes a proactive role in moderating content pre-NSFW filter implementation, aiming to cultivate a respectful community. The platform also leverages both automated systems and human moderation for content oversight and user reports of misconduct.

Features in development aim to enhance user conduct, including reminders during dates to foster engaging conversations, and options to discreetly exit conversations when necessary. Feedback mechanisms post-interaction will also contribute to community standards and behavioral improvements.

Plans also involve accommodating polyamorous relationships, illustrating the platform’s commitment to inclusivity.

Date Like Goblins promises a novel approach for gamers to find connections through shared interests, making it a compelling option for those seeking alternatives to conventional dating apps. Initial sign-ups are rewarded with three free dates before transitioning to a subscription model, offering a competitive edge over pricier services.

The Kickstarter campaign offers various funding tiers, ranging from $10 for access throughout 2024 to lifetime access for early backers at $100. The platform will open to the public following the campaign’s conclusion, with a waitlist available for interested individuals.
