The unveiling of Apple’s AI capabilities begins as the iOS 18.1 developer beta, released Monday, introduces some features from its AI suite to the public.
Introduced during the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June, Apple Intelligence had yet to feature in the initial developer and public beta versions until now.
Access Restrictions
The availability in iOS 18.1 remains selective. A June news announcement from Apple highlighted that the Apple Intelligence features would be accessible in beta on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as on iPads and Macs with the M1 chip, assuming the device’s language is U.S. English. Nevertheless, based on user feedback and our verification, the device’s region settings must also be adjusted to the U.S. This adjustment, importantly, doesn’t affect your App Store region.
After configuring the region and language, access the Apple Intelligence & Siri settings and opt to join the waitlist. A notification will inform you upon acceptance, allowing use of the Apple Intelligence functionalities. Be prepared for a wait as your device downloads necessary AI models, leading to a gradual rollout of all features.
Functionality Enhancements
The latest update introduces an enhanced animation for Siri, alongside the capability to activate Siri through a double tap on the bottom bar for text prompts.
Additionally, upgraded writing tools are available for text proofreading or rephrasing with selectable tones including “Friendly,” “Professional,” and “Concise.” These tools also allow for transforming extensive text into lists, summaries, tables, or key points.

The Mail application introduces a summarization ability and prioritizes important emails at the top of your inbox. Furthermore, it offers one-line email summaries and a smart reply function for expedited responses.
Additionally, the iOS 18.1 update introduces an Apple Intelligence-driven Focus Mode known as “Reduce Interruptions,” designed to highlight only vital notifications.
Many anticipated functionalities, including ChatGPT integration and the Image Playground, remain absent from the Apple Intelligence suite. As reported by Bloomberg, Apple is still resolving bugs within numerous new features, delaying their availability for user testing.
