Google Play Introduces ‘Comics’ Section for Manga Enthusiasts in Japan

by admin

In a series of exciting new features for Play, including AI-driven comparisons between apps and clusters of similar applications, Google has launched new “Curated Spaces”, which are areas focused on particular subjects.

Unveiled on Wednesday, the “Comics” space aims to captivate manga enthusiasts. It’s strategically located on the interface between the “For You” and “Top Charts” sectors, granting users in Japan the ability to explore a variety of content such as manga and anime titles, live events, video trailers, and more.

In collaboration with leading entities like Kodansha, the publisher behind “Attack on Titan”, Google enables users to peruse comic samples directly within the store, eliminating the need for separate app downloads. Moreover, the Comics section is adorned with anime- and manga-themed live streams at its pinnacle, alongside trailers for forthcoming series, curated selections by editors, and insights from critics.

Data from Grand View Research indicates that the worldwide manga market was valued at $13.69 billion in 2023. Among the top manga applications on Japan’s Google Play Store are Piccoma, Line Manga, Mechacomi, and Jump+. Kodansha’s Magapoke, boasting roughly 20 million installations, is also highlighted.

Currently, the Comics feature is exclusive to users in Japan, with no plans from Google to expand this offering to additional markets.

“We’re thrilled to unveil ‘Comics’ in Japan as our newest curated space. With over half the Japanese population reading comics, there’s a high demand for more accessible content,” shared Sam Bright, Vice President of Google Play, with the press in a recent demonstration.

However, Bright hinted at future plans for more curated spaces.

“This is just the beginning. Our vision involves launching more curated spaces that will enable individuals across various countries to immerse themselves in the content they are passionate about,” explained Bright.

Earlier in the year, a specially designed space for Cricket enthusiasts was trialed in India by the company, incorporating features like gamified voting and cricket-centered YouTube videos, along with contributions from over 100 apps. While the Cricket space has since been retired, it paves the way for potential future spaces oriented towards different sports.
