Dazz Secures $50M in Funding for AI-Driven, Automated Cloud Security Solutions

The focus on cybersecurity has intensified in the tech arena. The surge in data breaches has not slowed down, putting security enterprises under the microscope. Notably, Wiz, a rapidly expanding company, was recently the subject of a discontinued $23 billion offer from Google. In a related development, a cybersecurity firm closely linked with Wiz has successfully garnered a noteworthy investment, aiming to further its foothold in the cyber protection domain.

Dazz, specializing in the remediation of vulnerabilities for cloud-using enterprises, announced a $50 million equity investment. While Dazz has kept its valuation under wraps, informed sources state the company’s worth nearly grazes the $400 million mark post-funding.

Dazz collaborates with major enterprises and, without revealing exact revenue figures, boasts a revenue jump exceeding 400% in the previous year.

The investment round saw participation from Greylock Partners, Cyberstarts, Insight Partners, and Index Ventures – all of whom are revisiting investors and led this funding phase. Since its 2021 inception, Dazz has raised a cumulative $105 million.

Although based in Palo Alto, Dazz traces its origins back to Israel, holding significant ties to the region. Merav Bahat, co-founder and CEO of Dazz, formerly led Microsoft’s cloud security division. Her journey with cloud security began when Microsoft acquired her prior startup Adallom, which laid the foundations for Wiz. Bahat played a critical role in developing that area of Microsoft, scaling the business from scratch to a valuation of $2.5 billion by the time of her departure to start Dazz in 2020, which now has a valuation exceeding $20 billion according to recent figures.

Bahat’s tenure at Microsoft endowed her with a valuable network and insights, notably a close bond with Assaf Rappaport, Adallom’s CEO and later, Wiz’s. Their relationship spans both professional and personal realms, including Bahat being Rappaport’s go-to for dog sitting and a member of his extended circle. Bahat was among the first investors in Wiz, demonstrating the intertwined journeys of these tech leaders.

Bahat also gained comprehensive knowledge on the efficacies and deficiencies within cloud security, which guided the inception of Dazz with cybersecurity veterans Tomer Schwartz (CTO) and Yuval Ofir (VP R&D).

According to Bahat, the market presents a unique challenge: enterprises are enmeshed with an array of cloud security platforms like Palo Alto Networks, Wiz, and CrowdStrike, yet there’s a noticeable void in effective remediation strategies for when vulnerabilities and breaches are detected.

“We often hear from security teams about the unresolved challenges across vulnerability remediation and prioritization,” Bahat explained. The complexity and manual nature of addressing the multitudes of issues emerging across networks underscore these challenges. Some companies encounter up to billions of potential security vulnerabilities, she noted.

Despite the crowded field of players in the remediation sector, Dazz sets itself apart by offering technology capable of identifying vulnerabilities across various cloud platforms and environments, which it terms as “unified” remediation. Furthermore, Dazz leverages AI to automate and prioritize remediation activities, distinguishing between active threats and dormant issues to optimize security efforts.

Bahat highlighted that while traditional remediation efforts might only tackle about 10% of issues, Dazz’s methodology aims to address a far wider scope, potentially covering 50-80% of vulnerabilities.

The current shift towards fewer, but comprehensive IT providers doesn’t overshadow the need for specialized solutions, such as Dazz’s approach to remediation. This perspective is shared by Dazz and its investors, who see significant value in specialized interventions that can manage a company’s assets across both cloud and on-premise environments.
