Spotify Chief Asserts Hi-Fi Audio Strategy is Just Beginning

by admin

Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, recently shared insights into the ongoing development of hi-fi support on the platform, indicating that these efforts are just beginning. During the company’s earnings call this Tuesday, he unveiled plans for a premium tier.

In an announcement made in 2021, Spotify revealed its intent to introduce a superior subscription level named Spotify HiFi. This new tier promised to upgrade the audio quality to a “CD-quality, lossless audio format.” However, as of mid-2024, this new subscription option has not been launched.

Ek outlined the company’s vision on the investor call, expressing a desire to enhance the Spotify experience. He mentioned, “Consider this as a superior version of Spotify at approximately $5 more than the current premium rate, likely setting the price at about $17 or $18. This deluxe edition would not only encompass all the features of the standard subscription but would offer enhanced control, superior sound quality, among other benefits yet to be disclosed.”

This proposed pricing aligns with Bloomberg’s recent findings, which indicated that the new, more expensive tier would cost an additional $5 monthly. Apart from the much-anticipated hi-fi audio, this plan is also expected to introduce advanced playlist creation tools and more features.

Ek highlighted a significant portion of Spotify’s 246 million subscribers eager for an enhanced version of the platform. He emphasized this group’s desire for increased flexibility and extended musical options on Spotify.

Notably, competitors like Apple Music and Amazon Music have been offering lossless audio streaming at no additional cost for several years. The delay in Spotify’s hi-fi tier launch suggests a deliberate strategy to add sufficient value to justify the extra charge, especially in a market where rivals provide similar services for free.
