Embedded in the work culture of Silicon Valley startups is a continuous hustle, yet this constant push for productivity can negatively impact an entrepreneur’s mental well-being. We are excited to have Andy Dunn, co-founder and former CEO of Bonobos, at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 for an engaging fireside chat about navigating the pressures of the venture capital ecosystem while maintaining mental health.
Having a personal connection to the topic, Dunn was diagnosed with bipolar 1 disorder during his university years, a fact he kept separate from his professional journey while establishing the DTC brand Bonobos. In a bold move in 2019, he chose to share his experience publicly through a TED Talk and his book, “Burn Rate: Launching a Startup and Losing My Mind,” where he talks about his battle with mental health challenges during his entrepreneurial journey, including a harrowing episode in 2016 that resulted in a hospital stay—and a temporary jail time of 12 hours—just one year before Bonobos was sold to Walmart.
Launching Bonobos in June 2007, Dunn was among the pioneers of the direct-to-consumer movement. The company initially specialized in men’s pants, especially khakis, before broadening its offering to encompass a wide range of men’s clothing. Garnering upwards of $127 million in venture funding, Bonobos was eventually acquired by Walmart in 2017 for $310 million. Additionally, Dunn has initiated Red Swan Ventures, a venture capital firm, and founded Pie.
Tickets to TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 are still up for grabs and can be acquired here. This pivotal event will be held in San Francisco from October 28-30, gathering over 10,000 innovators, startup enthusiasts, and venture capitalists for a three-day deep dive into the most buzzworthy trends in the startup world, spanning AI, SaaS, and the exploration of outer space.
