Adobe Unveils Firefly AI Innovations for Illustrator and Photoshop

by admin

On Tuesday, Adobe unveiled innovative Firefly tools for Photoshop and Illustrator, presenting graphic designers with advanced options to incorporate the company’s proprietary AI technology. Through these enhancements, creatives can now articulate their design needs in simple instructions, enabling the generation of AI-powered textures or imagery that might traditionally require hours of manual effort.

With a committed focus on AI, Adobe navigates the delicate balance of embracing modern technology while addressing the concerns of its devoted user base. Through training Firefly with contributions from numerous creatives, Adobe compensates Adobe Stock photographers and illustrators with an annual bonus for their contributions. Reflecting on this, Adobe is adopting a strategy that prioritizes creators, by providing Creative Cloud subscribers a quota of generative credits each month without additional charges.

“These enhancements are integral to the Creative Cloud subscription,” stated Deepa Subramaniam, Adobe’s VP of product marketing, during a TechCrunch interview. “Our goal is to make this advanced technology accessible to our users, hence the substantial credit allotments.”

Illustrator introduces a pioneering beta feature, “Generative Shape Fill,” enabling users to embellish shapes with intricate details and textures by either entering text prompts or choosing a style reference. This functionality leverages the newly updated beta of Adobe’s Firefly Vector model, also launched on Tuesday. In a demonstration, Adobe’s Creative Cloud Evangelist Paul Trani illustrated how users could adjust the intricacy of the added details using sliders. Uniquely, Illustrator offers the flexibility to modify these AI-generated enhancements, distinguishing it from typical AI-generated image tools.

For Photoshop, Adobe is expanding the availability of Firefly’s text-to-image generator, facilitating the creation of AI-crafted images directly within the software through a “Generate Image” button and descriptive input. This feature employs the Adobe Firefly Image 3 Foundation model and has transitioned from a beta to a full release.

Adobe is leveraging the wave of interest in generative AI to foster loyalty without imposing a surcharge for these advanced features, unlike some of its competitors. The company has observed a trend of customers upgrading to more expensive plans to secure additional Firefly generative credits (one generative credit equates to one AI tool use). Since its introduction in March 2023, Firefly has been used to create over 9 billion images, Adobe reports.

In addition to generative AI tools, Illustrator has been enriched with a suite of features enhancing functionality without AI. The new Dimension Tool in Illustrator calculates lengths and angles within an image, while the beta Mockup tool introduces the ability to realistically superimpose logos onto any product image – a significant improvement from its former limitation to preset images. Another notable feature, Retype, enables font recognition, matching, and subsequent application.

Moreover, Photoshop is updating its toolkit with the general release of the Selection Brush Tool and Adjustment Brush Tool, both designed to simplify and expedite otherwise monotonous tasks.
