India Eliminates ‘Angel Tax,’ Enhancing Support for Startups

by admin

In a significant policy shift, India’s central government has decided to eliminate the widely criticized “angel tax” for investors across the board, marking a notable win for the startup community which has advocated against this policy for an extended period.

“In an effort to strengthen the Indian startup landscape, encourage the entrepreneurial drive, and foster innovation, I am announcing the repeal of the angel tax for all investor categories,” declared Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her budget address.

Since its inception in 2012, the angel tax has been a source of frustration for new ventures and their financial supporters. It imposed taxes on investments in early-stage companies at values that surpassed tax authorities’ perceived fair market value — often leading to disputes due to the more optimistic valuation anticipations from investors. Despite attempts to revise the tax in 2019 to benefit the startup ecosystem, the amendments fell short of providing substantial relief.

The crux of the issue lay in the conflicting methods used to value emerging businesses. While investors often forecast future returns using discounted cash flow analyses, tax officials tended to assess based on current valuations, which are generally minimal for nascent startups. This valuation discord has frequently caused complications for founders seeking investment.

For a considerable time, leading figures within the Indian startup arena have voiced their opposition to the angel tax, arguing that it stifled essential funding required for innovation.

This story is unfolding. Further details are expected.
