Microsoft and CrowdStrike have now shared the extent of disruption from the latest outage. An update glitch in CrowdStrike’s security software initiated a malfunction, causing Windows devices to fail, leaving macOS and Linux systems untouched.

Despite the relatively small fraction of devices impacted, the consequences were felt on a large scale across various sectors including banking, retail, brokerage services, and transportation networks, with airlines globally pausing flights.

“The affected device proportion was minor, yet the widespread impact underlines the critical role CrowdStrike plays in vital services operated by businesses,” stated Weston in the blog post.

Weston did not provide information on what fraction of Windows systems equipped with CrowdStrike’s solution were compromised. He highlighted the potential for even a singular device failure to disrupt entire networks or data centers.

Weston further clarified that although the mishap originated within CrowdStrike’s update process, Microsoft has been collaboratively working with CrowdStrike to mend the issue. With the recovery process potentially being hindered by the need for manual interventions on each device, Weston revealed that a concerted effort between Microsoft, CrowdStrike, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud Platform has yielded a scalable remedy aimed at leveraging Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure to hasten the resolution.
