SpaceX’s Falcon 9 is hailed as the most dependable launch system to date. However, even the best sometimes falter, as evidenced last Thursday evening when its second stage encountered an unexpected failure while deploying a new batch of Starlink satellites into orbit.
This incident stands out as the most notable event of the week due to its sheer significance. Moreover, the resolution of this failure is critical for two imminent manned spaceflights: Polaris Dawn, the privately financed mission by tycoon Jared Isaacman slated for the end of July, and a mid-August astronaut ferrying mission for NASA. SpaceX is, without doubt, poised to resume its launch schedule swiftly.

Encountering the European space scene at the decade’s turn, SpaceX pioneer Bulent Altan and seasoned investor Joram Voelklein saw parallels with the nascent American NewSpace era of the 2000s.
Opting for an early investment in Isar Aerospace, a German launch startup, they also aimed to capitalize on the broader opportunity to nurture the space industry across both the U.S. and Europe. Consequently, they founded Alpine Space Ventures in Munich, Germany, in 2020. Just two years into fundraising, they secured their inaugural fund at $184 million (€170 million), marking the globe’s most substantial first-time VC fund devoted to space ventures.

Highlight Launch of the Week
Cheer on, Ariane 6! Europe’s latest heavyweight rocket embarked on its maiden flight last week, smoothly sailing through its phases until encountering a glitch in the upper stage while in orbit. Fortunately, this hiccup occurred post the successful deployment of its satellite cargo, leading ESA officials to deem the mission a triumph. My previous article explored the critical importance of Ariane 6’s operational success.

I recently had the chance to watch Ashlee Vance’s “Wild Wild Space,” an engaging new documentary set to premiere on HBO on July 17. It’s an incredibly entertaining piece that I recommend you watch, especially if you can dedicate 90 minutes this week. Grab some popcorn and enjoy a thrilling space adventure!
