Ahead of the 2024 presidential campaign, Twitch has announced the reinstatement of former president Donald Trump’s account, lifting an “indefinite” suspension imposed in 2021. The platform, owned by Amazon, communicated to TechCrunch on Friday its decision to reactivate Trump’s channel, emphasizing the importance of providing a platform for presidential candidates to speak directly to the public whenever possible.
Before the suspension, Trump utilized his Twitch channel to air campaign events. With the reactivation of his account, these broadcasts can resume.
Following the events of January 6 at the U.S. Capitol, Twitch was among several tech platforms that suspended Trump’s account, a group that also includes Twitter (currently known as X), Facebook, and YouTube.
This reinstatement follows Meta’s recent decision to restore Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, removing additional suspension measures. Meta’s rationale mirrors that of Twitch, highlighting a commitment to ensuring all candidates for the presidency have access to their platforms on an equal basis in the lead-up to the election.
Notably, YouTube welcomed back Trump last year, and under Elon Musk’s new ownership, X reinstated him in 2022.
While Twitch has removed the ban, it stressed to TechCrunch that Trump’s channel will need to adhere to its Community Guidelines.
“Our commitment to enforcing our Community Guidelines remains steadfast, with any breaches resulting in appropriate enforcement measures,” a Twitch representative stated. “Unlike some platforms, Twitch does not maintain a separate set of rules for public figures; all channels, irrespective of the owner’s notoriety, are held to the same standards.”
Before the “indefinite” suspension in 2021, Twitch had momentarily suspended Trump’s account in 2020 for disseminating material deemed hateful.
