In a recent announcement, Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, verified that the unveiling of the company’s robotaxi has been postponed due to his request for a “significant alteration to the vehicle’s front-end design.”
A report by Bloomberg News last week suggested that Tesla had rescheduled the launch event to October from its original plan for August 8. An immediate response from the company about the report was not forthcoming. Following the news, Tesla’s stock experienced a drop of over 6%, though it later rebounded.
Addressing a query on X, the platform under his ownership, Musk clarified the grounds for this delay.
“I believe we needed a key design tweak at the front, plus this delay gives us time to unveil a bit more,” he stated.
In April, Musk hinted at the robotaxi event, coinciding with a Reuters piece asserting that Tesla was postponing the development of a new, more affordable $25,000 vehicle on an advanced platform. Musk contradicted this claim on X.
Tesla’s internal strategy included creating both the robotaxi and the much-anticipated $25,000 vehicle, occasionally referred to as the Model 2, on the same platform. Despite this, Musk has oscillated on the notion of producing a new car equipped with a steering wheel and pedals, showing a strong inclination towards dedicating efforts to the robotaxi concept.
Shortly after revealing plans for the robotaxi, Musk announced a reduction of more than 10% in Tesla’s worldwide staff, emphasizing the company’s full commitment to achieving autonomy.
Notoriously, Musk often publicizes initiatives that even some Tesla employees are unaware of, necessitating a rapid organizational response. For instance, in February, he surprised the Tesla Roadster’s development team by declaring on X that the long-awaited next-generation Roadster would surpass its initially promised speed capabilities, as reported by The Information.
Likewise, Musk’s announcement on the robotaxi caught some employees off guard, shared by an individual with close ties to the situation who wished to remain anonymous.
