Upon exploring the European space industry landscape at the dawn of the 2020s, former SpaceX engineer Bulent Altan, alongside seasoned investor Joram Voelklein, discovered a landscape reminiscent of the nascent stages of America’s NewSpace era in the early 2000s, marked by the emergence of SpaceX and its contemporaries.
Their initial venture involved a personal stake in the German launch venture Isar Aerospace. Yet, their vision expanded towards a more ambitious goal: fostering development within the space industries across both Europe and the U.S. This led to the creation of Alpine Space Ventures in Munich, Germany, by 2020. Achieving a significant milestone, they amassed a formidable $184 million (€170 million) fund in 2022, marking the globe’s most sizable inaugural VC fund dedicated to the space sector.
The fund has garnered support from an impressive roster of over 20 individuals who embarked on their careers at SpaceX, along with leading entities like the European Investment Fund and the NATO Innovation Fund. This newly acquired wealth is poised for allocation across 10 to 15 ventures (with five already on board), contemplating investments as substantial as $5.4 million (€5 million) per endeavor while also reserving ample funds for successive financing rounds. Altan highlighted that while the focus predominantly lies on European enterprises, ventures extending across the Atlantic hold their interest too.
Altan, underscoring the mutual ethos shared with SpaceX, revealed in a conversation that their investment strategy is significantly influenced by SpaceX’s pioneering efforts in the satellite domain. Hence, their investment portfolio predominantly features companies involved in the manufacture of satellite components and the satellites themselves, steering clear from ventures that might directly compete with SpaceX.
Alpine Space Ventures envisions an evolving space industry where the demand for space-related services by non-space entities fosters the development of a robust supply chain, reminiscent of the automotive sector. They foresee telecommunications and Earth observation as pivotal markets spurring demand for satellite infrastructure and components.
Currently, Alpine Space Ventures boasts investments in five promising companies, selected out of nearly a thousand pitches over two years, as shared by Voelklein. Notable mentions include K2 Space, aiming to construct sizable satellites optimized for Starship deployments, and Reflex Aerospace from Germany.
The foundational strength of Alpine Space Ventures lies in its team’s technological acumen, as Voelklein points out, with notable members like Catriona Chambers and Hans Koenigsmann, who bring a wealth of experience from their years at SpaceX.
Despite its strategic advantages, investing in the space sector comes with its unique set of challenges, especially when considering the typical ten-year lifespan of a fund. Identifying ventures that promise technical innovation, valuable IP, and sustainable assets can be complex.
Altan emphasizes the importance of industry insight and foresight in aligning investment decisions with technological advancements, a strategy that has been pivotal in securing investor confidence.
Furthermore, while the success metrics of space entrepreneurship might seem unconventional, such as celebrating a rocket’s mid-air explosion as progress, Alpine Space Ventures aims to bridge understanding among investors and policymakers about the space industry’s ethos of rapid prototyping and iteration.
Lastly, the challenge of securing considerable upfront investment is highlighted, especially in Europe, where funding mechanisms provided by the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA have historically facilitated space startups’ transition from R&D to viable products. Altan is hopeful, however, about Europe’s growing acknowledgment of its role in contributing capabilities to the industry.
Despite unforeseen delays, partially attributed to geopolitical instabilities and economic shifts, Altan expressed satisfaction in not only meeting but exceeding the initial financial target, reflective of a positive trajectory towards achieving their objectives.
