Spotify is evolving into a more interactive platform, enhancing its identity beyond music streaming by introducing podcast comments. This feature allows for direct interaction between podcasters and their audience, similar to Polls and Q&As. With its 2023 overhaul, incorporating a TikTok-style discovery feed, opportunities for creators to sell merch and tickets, and the inclusion of stories, Spotify is gradually morphing into a comprehensive audio-centric social network.
The recent support for comments on podcast episodes solidifies Spotify’s venture into social networking features, sparking curiosity about whether music artists will receive the same capability. This development could significantly impact the platform, given the vibrant and active communities surrounding musical artists.
In a discussion with Spotify’s VP of Podcast Product Maya Prohovnik, the conversation turned to potentially applying the comments feature to artist pages as well.
Prohovnik was non-committal, stressing the importance of appropriate feature implementation that resonates with the nature of the content and its creators, without explicitly confirming any plans.
This idea is not entirely new—Spotify’s rival, Apple, experimented with integrating social networking into music with its platform, Ping, in 2010. Despite being branded as a music-centric social network, Ping did not take off as expected and was ultimately discontinued in 2012. Apple’s subsequent attempts, including Connect, faced similar fates.
Apple Music still tentatively incorporates social elements, suggesting users to follow based on contacts, allowing them to discover what friends are listening to.

Yet, Spotify has not made sweeping statements about becoming an audio-focused social network. Instead, it has been gradually enhancing the social aspects of its platform. Following its redesign last year, Spotify introduced a video feed similar to TikTok’s layout, on its homepage, catering to the preferences of the younger generation.
Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, acknowledged TikTok’s influence in reshaping user experiences, emphasizing the continuous effort to learn from the market and adapt to provide a superior user experience.

The platform has also rolled out new features for artists to engage their fans, such as Spotify Clips and Countdown Pages, alongside providing fans with updates through video messages in the annual Spotify Wrapped campaign. It’s nurturing an ecosystem where users not only consume content but also interact meaningfully with it.
Spotify’s foray into comments marks its ambition to foster an environment of active engagement, steering the app towards becoming more than just a music streaming service but a vibrant social network for audio content.
