Google Maps has unveiled a new feature for iOS and CarPlay users, integrating speedometer and speed limit signs more than half a decade after these were first launched on Android, aiming to assist iPhone owners in steering clear of speed-related fines while on the road.
In an exclusive revelation to TechCrunch, Google has initiated the global rollout of speedometer and speed limit displays for users accessing the app on iPhone. This feature, activated during navigation, presents the current speed of the vehicle in either miles or kilometers based on the user’s location.
TechCrunch first noticed the introduction of these speed-related features on Google Maps in India at the beginning of last week. Google then confirmed with us on Tuesday that this update is indeed meant for a worldwide release.
Activating the speedometer and speed limits features is straightforward. iPhone users can simply tap on their profile icon within the Google Maps app, proceed to Settings> Navigation> Driving options, and enable these options there. With the speed limits feature enabled, the app will signal users to adjust their driving speed to match the local speed limit by changing the color of the speed indicator.
Google has clarified on a support page that the provided speedometer is meant for “informational use only” and recommends that drivers should always check their vehicle’s speedometer for accurate speed measurement. The link to the support page can be found here.
Initially launched for Android users in 2019, the speedometer and speed limits feature was expanded to over 40 countries in May of the same year, post its initial release in a handful of regions.
