Revamped Airchat App Emerges: An Asynchronous Twist on the Clubhouse Experience

by admin

Since its launch in April, Airchat, a conversational app centered around voice exchanges, is undergoing significant changes.

The revamped Airchat presents itself as an asynchronous version of Clubhouse: It allows users to enter channels dedicated to particular subjects where they can share voice or video messages in reply to others within the channel. Moreover, participants have the option to create group direct messages (DMs) to continue discussions away from the central thread. This marks a shift from its initial version, which resembled a feed similar to Twitter’s but also included group discussions on a variety of topics, including entrepreneurship, health, and literature.

Kyle Barber, a designer at Airchat, shared with TechCrunch, “Following our launch, the enthusiasm for topic-specific groups was evident, so we decided to invest more into that area to foster connections among individuals with shared interests. It shifts the focus towards your passions, enabling conversations with others within those channels or rooms.”

Airchat appeals particularly to those who prefer sending voice notes over typing lengthy texts. However, the real challenge for any new social platform, including Airchat, arises with scaling user base: How will it manage crowded conversations? How will it navigate the hurdles of moderating audio content, an issue that Clubhouse has encountered? One advantage for Airchat is its highly accurate, integrated transcription service, which could be extremely beneficial if the platform adopts AI-driven text moderation standards for those transcriptions.

This isn’t the first strategic shift for Airchat. The company, co-founded by AngelList’s Naval Ravikant and Tinder’s former product chief Brian Norgard, launched its inaugural product in May 2023 and has since redeveloped the app for this year’s release. Perhaps this iteration will be the perfect charm!
