Pursuing YouTube’s Strategy, Spotify Introduces Comments for Podcasts

by admin

Spotify is enhancing its podcast experience by introducing a fresh, interactive tool: podcast comments. Debuting on Tuesday, this feature invites listeners to share their thoughts on specific episode pages, fostering a stronger sense of community. Creators can engage directly with the audience by liking and replying to comments and curate which comments are displayed on their episode pages.

This initiative positions Spotify as a closer rival to YouTube, offering a more interactive space for creators and their audiences. It builds on Spotify’s venture into video podcasts, which started with initial tests in 2021 and expanded in 2022. Recently, Spotify has also extended video support to include independent podcasters.

Spotify now boasts over 250,000 video podcasts on its platform. In the current year alone, approximately 9 million listeners have interacted with Spotify’s podcast-centric interactive features such as polls and Q&As, representing an 80% growth from the previous year.

By welcoming podcast comments, Spotify aims to enhance community building among content creators, thereby potentially increasing listener retention and podcast consumption.

Spotify’s internal data illustrates that users who interact with these features are significantly more likely to return to a podcast within 30 days and consume twice as many podcasts as those who do not interact.

The introduction of comments offers a new platform for active listeners to participate, aligning with the desires of over 70% of podcast aficionados seeking increased interaction with their beloved hosts.

However, the implemention of this feature is at the discretion of the podcast hosts.

“This rollout is being approached with careful consideration,” states Maya Prohovnik, VP of Podcast Product, who emphasizes the importance of balancing expressive freedom with safety and quality conversations.

The commenting feature will gradually become available, starting with select podcasts this week. All Spotify users will gain access to this feature over the following month.

Content creators who opt in to this feature will maintain oversight, with the ability to enable or disable comments for individual episodes and to moderate which comments get published.

Creators will enjoy interacting by liking and replying to comments, receiving alerts for new comments or achievements, and accessing further insights about their audience through the Spotify for Podcasters app.

Prohovnik highlights Spotify’s focus on enhancing creative control and collaboration with creators to refine the platform based on their input.

Acknowledging the potential time demands of moderation, Spotify is exploring automated solutions to facilitate more natural comment flow while ensuring content integrity.

As the commenting function exits beta testing, following positive feedback, creators who have previously engaged with other interactive features will be the first to access it.

Spotify’s strategy for podcasting is evolving, prioritizing inclusivity for all podcasters. This pivot is steering Spotify towards profitability in the podcast sector, according to Prohovnik.

Though immediate monetization through comments is not planned, Spotify is considering ways to highlight dedicated fans within the comment section. This approach could potentially align with monetized fan recognition models similar to YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Stickers.

This engagement is intended to draw listeners back to the app through notifications, encouraging their participation in the evolving social aspects of Spotify, beyond merely consuming content.

Update, 9:05 a.m. ET: Clarification provided that comments will be opt-out for creators, though participation remains optional.
