In a groundbreaking move, Tesla’s Model Y will now be available for official use by government employees in China.
This development is taking place in Jiangsu province, located in East China, where the Model Y has been added to a list for government procurement, an inclusion that was also highlighted by the state-run media outlet The Paper.
Tesla stands out as the sole foreign electric vehicle maker to be featured in the procurement list, signaling its successful endeavors in gaining the Chinese government’s favor. Tesla has established a Gigafactory in Shanghai and ensures that all self-driving data collected from its vehicles in China is exclusively stored and processed within the country.
Despite the ongoing China-U.S. tensions, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has demonstrated a strong commitment to the Chinese market, which remains the world’s most significant electric vehicle market. The company successfully overcame a regulatory challenge earlier in the year, securing an agreement with Chinese authorities to introduce its advanced self-driving features in China and is collaborating with Baidu to leverage their high-definition mapping technology.
However, amidst stiff competition from local electric vehicle manufacturers like BYD, Tesla is facing challenges, particularly in the pricing arena. The company’s Shanghai plant reported a drop in shipments by 24.2% when compared year-over-year, as stated by China’s Passenger Car Association.
