If you enjoy role-playing games (RPGs), imagine a text-based experience driven by artificial intelligence (AI) that allows for entirely unscripted interactions with non-player characters (NPCs). Latitude, a startup renowned for its innovative text adventure games, has launched a new platform named Voyage, enabling players to unleash their creativity as game designers.
Voyage allows users to craft their gaming landscapes with AI assistance, encompassing elements such as regions, cities, quests, and villains. For instance, if a player envisions a fishing village plagued by a sea monster, the AI generates the corresponding game code to realise that concept. This world can be customised further before sharing with others.
The platform supports various gaming experiences, from light-hearted adventures to intense quests. As a text-centric format, players engage by reading the narrative (with audio narration options) and type out their character’s actions. Unique decision-making is encouraged; unlike standard RPGs, where choices may involve running or fighting, players can opt for unconventional actions, like taking on the role of a goblin therapist.
Outcomes of actions are narrated by the AI, fostering unexpected interactions. This dynamic results in surprising dialogues—during trials, for example, a troll lamented about his marital woes instead of simply attacking. Character growth mimics traditional mechanics, relying on skills and luck, with players earning new abilities through successful quests and encounters.
Voyage features a robust World Engine developed over five years, capable of managing complex character interactions and maintaining narrative continuity. Unlike typical NPCs, characters in this system have personalities and remember past interactions, allowing for relational dynamics that affect future encounters.
According to Latitude CEO Nick Walton, this AI technology delivers richer character experiences, creating genuine backstories and reactions that enhance gameplay. The company garnered attention with AI Dungeon in 2019, which demonstrated the potential of generative AI in gaming. Voyage aims to significantly expand upon that concept, offering a detailed game world rather than a predefined narrative.
Currently in expanded beta testing with plans for a later open beta, early testers have already interacted with over 160,000 AI-generated characters, making nearly 3,000 gameplay decisions on average.
Along with the platform’s launch, Latitude has partnered with Google’s AI Futures Fund, integrating various AI models for enhanced gameplay. Former Roblox Chief Business Officer Craig Donato now serves as an investor and board member, contributing to a roster of stakeholders that includes notable enterprises like Album VC and NFX.
While Voyage is free to start, premium subscription tiers priced at $15, $30, and $50 will soon offer advanced AI functionalities and remove limitations on actions. The platform caters to a wide age range but incorporates some mature content, akin to offerings on Steam, with safety measures and parental controls implemented for user protection.
