In the realm of email, excitement has become a rare commodity. For older generations, the thrill of Gmail’s initial launch in 2004 stands out, while younger users might never have felt that spark. Various startups have attempted to rejuvenate email, but most simply piled on enhancements without altering the core experience. Enter Extra, a novel email application crafted by former Pinterest designers and engineers, aiming to completely overhaul the traditional inbox.
Extra, the flagship product of BuildForever, shifts away from subject lines, folders, and tags, instead presenting an inbox tailored to users’ lives. Its real-time “Today” tab showcases essential information drawn from the clutter of one’s email, allowing for quick access to what truly matters.
In this innovative setup, users will find their inbox categorically organised, reflecting their personal activities, whether it be family matters, travel plans, or finance updates. This custom structure provides a personalised experience, empowering users to manage their communications with newfound clarity.
The concept behind Extra arose from co-founder Naveen Gavini’s struggles with his personal inbox, often overwhelmed by a barrage of messages. After years of maintaining “inbox zero” at work, his own email became a source of frustration. Missed messages and overlooked friendships motivated him to address the fundamental issues in email organisation.
Rather than pitching Extra as merely another AI tool, Gavini and his team focus on practical solutions to user problems. The application’s AI capabilities quietly improve the experience by learning and organising the inbox while users tackle their to-dos.
The “Today” view in Extra represents the user’s priority actions and important updates, while also suggesting next logical steps for tasks at hand. Beneath this actionable content lies a section for low-priority emails, where users can unsubscrib from unwanted content and clean up their inboxes.
Extra also offers specific tabs for “Events” and “Shop,” curating relevant activities and product promotions into easily digestible formats. This approach helps users focus on meaningful communications without the usual clutter.
As Extra moves through its beta phase, testers have already unsubscribed from millions of emails, enhancing user experiences. Initial reviews highlight its polished design and user-friendly interface, making email management unexpectedly enjoyable.
According to Gavini, the goal is to infuse the inspiration and joy characteristic of Pinterest into the typically anxiety-inducing world of email. With aspirations to extend their innovative approach to various other digital applications, BuildForever has received $9.5 million in seed funding, signalling promising growth ahead.
Available for free on iOS and the web, Extra hopes to draw more users into a refreshing email experience, ultimately redefining how we interact with our inboxes.
