Legacy social media platforms have been designed to captivate users, keeping them glued to their screens with an endless stream of content, primarily for advertising revenue. However, as consumer fatigue sets in, some new companies are seeking to alleviate this burnout by encouraging users to engage in real-world activities and limit addictive features like infinite scrolling.
Bond, a new social networking site launched recently, aims to address screen addiction with the help of artificial intelligence. Co-founder and CEO Dino Becirovic explains that Bond offers a fresh approach to social media, where users can document their activities through various formats, including images, videos, and audio recordings, referred to as “memories.”
Unlike traditional platforms, Bond is designed to encourage users to step away from their screens. Its AI technology analyses user-generated content to offer tailored suggestions for experiences and events that users might enjoy. For example, if a user frequently shares their love for Pho, Bond might recommend a highly-rated Vietnamese restaurant nearby. The more users engage with the platform by sharing experiences, the more relevant recommendations the AI can generate.
The user interface of Bond is reminiscent of Instagram, minimising clutter by displaying profiles in a clustered layout. Each user’s “memories” are available for 24 hours, after which they are stored privately, allowing users to revisit their experiences whenever they wish.
The team behind Bond comprises veterans who have worked on major social media apps such as TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook. As for how Bond plans to generate revenue without traditional advertisements, Becirovic has outlined a model where users can potentially license their data for AI training purposes. This would allow users to profit from their memories, with Bond taking a small percentage of the earnings.
Furthermore, Bond may evolve to serve as a product recommendation tool that collaborates with e-commerce platforms, enhancing user experience and driving sales without resorting to ad-based revenue streams. Users will have control over their data, with the ability to delete memories or entire profiles. Privacy measures are also high on the agenda, with promises of improved data protection, including end-to-end encryption planned for the future.
At this early stage, the primary focus for Bond is creating a valuable user experience rather than immediate monetisation. As the platform develops, its goal is to provide a meaningful way for users to engage with their memories while facilitating a healthier relationship with technology.
