Cursor Negotiates to Secure Over $2 Billion at a $50 Billion Valuation Amidst Rapid Enterprise Expansion

by admin

AI coding startup Cursor is on the brink of securing significant new funding, with plans to raise a minimum of $2 billion, as reported by sources close to the matter. This four-year-old company, which was previously valued at $29.3 billion, anticipates a valuation of around $50 billion with this new capital influx.

Leading investors, including Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz, are set to spearhead this financing round. Additionally, Battery Ventures is expected to come on board as a new investor, while existing strategic investor Nvidia is also likely to contribute financially.

Although the funding round has garnered considerable interest and is oversubscribed, the finalised terms are still in flux and subject to change. Should this funding materialise, it would nearly double Cursor’s previous valuation, reflecting substantial growth in the AI coding sector despite intense competition from rivals like Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s updated Codex.

Cursor’s revenue trajectory remains strong, with projections indicating an annualised revenue run rate exceeding $6 billion by the end of 2026. This growth suggests an intention to triple its annual revenue within the next 10 months, as Cursor recently reported reaching a $2 billion run rate based on its monthly sales.

Previously operating at negative gross margins, Cursor has recently turned a corner thanks to the introduction of its proprietary Composer model last November, along with the strategic use of more cost-effective models, such as China’s Kimi. These changes have allowed the company to achieve slight profitability in gross margins, particularly on sales to large enterprises, although it still faces losses with individual developer accounts.

To reduce dependency on outside AI models and avoid potential competition from suppliers like Anthropic, Cursor is focusing on developing its own technology. Notably, Cursor was co-founded in 2022 by Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, and Aman Sanger, who were students at MIT.

At this time, neither Cursor nor Battery Ventures have commented publicly on the matter, and inquiries for comment from Thrive, Andreessen Horowitz, and Nvidia have gone unanswered.
