Netflix has announced the launch of a new standalone app specifically for children’s games, dubbed Netflix Playground. This app, available to Netflix subscribers, is ad-free and devoid of in-app purchases, promising a user-friendly experience for young gamers.
Designed for kids aged eight and under, Netflix Playground offers access to a continually expanding library of interactive games featuring beloved characters from popular children’s shows. The app is currently available in several regions, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, with a wider global rollout slated for April 28. It can be downloaded on both iOS and Android platforms.
One of its standout features is the ability to use the app offline, making it ideal for situations like long flights or shopping trips. The initial offerings include engaging titles such as “Playtime With Peppa Pig,” where users can explore Peppa’s world through various activities, and a “Sesame Street” game focused on memory matching and coordination challenges. Other games in the lineup include “Let’s Color,” “Storybots,” and “Bad Dinosaurs.”
John Derderian, Netflix’s Vice President of Animation Series and Kids & Family TV, highlighted the company’s vision: “We’re building a world where kids can not only watch their favourite stories, they can step inside them and interact with their favourite characters.” This aligns with Netflix’s aim to create an engaging platform that combines discovery, learning, and play for young audiences.
While Netflix initially ventured into gaming in 2021 with ambitious goals, it has since scaled back its efforts after some titles struggled to gain traction. The company has closed multiple video game studios, including Boss Fight and Spry Fox, reflecting a strategic shift in its approach to gaming.
In the latter part of 2022, Netflix also began exploring TV gaming, introducing a series of new party games meant for group play, like Tetris and Pictionary. Furthermore, Netflix has expressed its commitment to cloud gaming, though acknowledges that it remains in the early stages of this initiative.
Overall, Netflix Playground represents the streaming service’s latest effort to tap into the gaming market for children, providing an entertaining and safe environment for its young audience to engage with familiar characters and stories.
