Google has announced a suite of new privacy and recovery tools aimed at enhancing user security across its Android products. Among these updates, the company introduces features like suspicious link detection in messages, the ability to sign in using a phone number, and a new recovery contact system.
The recovery feature is particularly significant, designed to help users regain access to their Google accounts without losing vital information if their device is lost or their account is hacked. The new Recovery Contacts feature allows users to designate trusted friends or family members who can assist in account recovery. When locked out due to a lost device or forgotten password, users can select a recovery contact, prompting them to verify their identity through a temporary verification number, valid for 15 minutes. Users can add up to ten recovery contacts, but these individuals must approve the request before being added, and once they are designated as a contact, they cannot be used again for a week.
In addition, Google is rolling out a “sign-in with mobile number” feature. This will automatically identify accounts linked to a specific phone number and allow users to verify their identity using their previous device’s lock-screen passcode or pattern, providing a simple recovery method when a device is not available.
Further bolstering user security, Google has integrated spam link detection within its Google Messages app. Users of Pixel devices will benefit from on-device protection, which automatically warns against potential spam or scam messages. If a suspicious link is clicked within a message, the app will alert the user, preventing their access to that page.
For tech-savvy users, Google has also introduced a key verifier for Google Messages. This feature ensures that communications are end-to-end encrypted and private while allowing users with Android 10 and later to verify contacts by scanning a QR code.
Alongside these key enhancements, Google is launching an educational game titled “Be Scam Ready,” aimed at informing users about various types of fraud and scam tactics they may encounter.
These security upgrades reflect Google’s ongoing commitment to user privacy and protection, providing more robust tools to safeguard accounts against potential threats.
