Anduril, a prominent player in defense technology, is set to enhance its capabilities in space warfare by acquiring ExoAnalytic Solutions, a specialised data company. ExoAnalytic operates a global network of 400 telescopes, which it employs to monitor spacecraft in high Earth orbits. This data is crucial for U.S. national security agencies to maintain vigilance over foreign spacecraft and manage American orbital assets.
Gokul Subramanian, Anduril’s VP of Engineering, highlighted that their ongoing collaboration with ExoAnalytic has yielded expertise in space domain awareness and missile defence. He asserted that the Department of Defense deserves the most comprehensive understanding of space activities.
While the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, it comes as Anduril is reportedly securing a significant funding round of $4 billion from investors like Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz. Notably, ExoAnalytic will be integrated directly into Anduril, rather than functioning as a subsidiary, although it will still serve its existing and prospective clients. This acquisition is poised to more than double Anduril’s workforce focused on space defence, adding 130 new employees to its current 120.
Utilising ExoAnalytic’s technology could enhance Anduril’s chances of winning government contracts related to the Golden Dome project, an air and missile defence initiative that will rely on thousands of satellites for tracking and targeting hostile missiles. Achieving real-time coordination and awareness among these satellites will be crucial.
Anduril also intends to launch three spacecraft this year as part of its research and development initiatives, leveraging ExoAnalytic’s space data expertise. One key project includes an infrared tracking satellite, developed in collaboration with Apex Space, aimed at executing missions in high orbits in partnership with Impulse Space and Argo Space.
Additionally, the advanced machine vision algorithms developed by ExoAnalytic, which are designed for identifying satellites, may also strengthen Anduril’s efforts in missile interception. The Pentagon has previously awarded Anduril a contract to develop a space-based missile interceptor, indicating a strategic alignment of their capabilities.
Founded in 2008, ExoAnalytic was established to evolve missile defence sensor technology to monitor spatial activities, responding to military calls for enhanced situational awareness. Its growth has been supported by significant federal contracts, including $26 million in Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants since 2010.
In light of increasing tensions, US Space Force officials have voiced concerns regarding the proximity of Chinese and Russian spacecraft to American and European satellites, which could lead to potential interceptions or damage. Subramanian emphasised the importance of securing the space layer, citing a commander’s assertion that naval fleets could not operate without it being secured, reinforcing Anduril’s commitment to addressing these challenges in the domain of space defence.
