OpenAI Discontinues Another Experiment: The Erotic Mode of ChatGPT

by admin

OpenAI has announced an indefinite pause on its plans to develop an “erotic” mode for ChatGPT, a development that has sparked significant controversy and criticism from various tech watchdog groups and even its internal staff. Initially proposed by CEO Sam Altman in October, the “adult mode” idea was met with concerns about its potential misuse, with some advisers warning during a heated January meeting that it could lead to harmful applications, including a so-called “sexy suicide coach,” as reported previously.

The Financial Times highlighted that there is currently no set timeline for this controversial feature’s release. An OpenAI spokesperson commented to TechCrunch that the company had “nothing further to add” regarding the situation.

This decision reflects a broader trend, as OpenAI has been shifting its focus on essential projects by sidelining several initiatives. Recently, it announced that it would be deprioritising the Instant Checkout feature within ChatGPT, which aimed to facilitate e-commerce transactions. Furthermore, the company surprised many with its decision to shut down Sora, an AI video generator that faced backlash for contributing to the proliferation of low-quality AI content online.

These moves come after reports of a significant strategic shift at OpenAI, aimed at narrowing its focus amidst growing competition, particularly from Anthropic, which has been actively releasing innovative coding and business tools and gaining traction in the process. The recent announcement of a $200 million agreement with the Department of Defense further underscores OpenAI’s pivot towards more lucrative and serious enterprises, contrasting sharply with the distractions of developing adult-oriented features.

As the competition heats up, particularly with Anthropic, which is embroiled in legal challenges regarding similar government contracts, it appears that OpenAI is prioritising projects with strategic value rather than those that attract controversy or distraction. In summary, OpenAI’s recent actions indicate a decisive shift away from sensational projects like “adult mode” towards a more grounded focus on business applications and defence, suggesting that the future of AI might be shaped less by themes of entertainment and more by practicality and military applications.
