Carl Pei, co-founder and CEO of Nothing, envisions a future where devices transcend traditional app-based functionality, driven instead by AI agents. In a recent interview at the SXSW conference, Pei highlighted that the era of apps is nearing its end, warning startups that rely heavily on app models to brace for disruption.
Pei previously discussed an AI-first device concept when securing $200 million in Series C funding last year, where he introduced the idea of a smartphone that leverages AI for personalisation, aiming to eliminate the need for users to second-guess its outputs. He elaborated on this vision at SXSW, detailing the path to realising such a device.
One of the initial features being trialled involves AI executing tasks autonomously, such as booking travel arrangements. However, Pei noted that this basic functionality is somewhat mundane. The more exciting prospects lie in AI’s long-term ability to learn user intentions and provide proactive nudges towards personal goals, like encouraging a healthier lifestyle. He likened this capability to memory features in systems like ChatGPT, suggesting that these AI agents will become adept at delivering suggestions aligned with users’ unexpressed needs.
Pei criticises the current smartphone interface as outdated, arguing it resembles pre-iPhone technology. He pointed out that core user interactions, involving lock screens, home screens, and app navigation, have remained stagnant for over two decades despite significant technological advancements. He expressed frustration over the multiple steps required to accomplish simple tasks, such as ordering coffee, which often necessitates multiple apps and interactions.
Looking ahead, he advocates for devices that intuitively understand user intentions, suggesting that smartphones ought to operate on a basis of “I know you well, so I’ll handle it for you,” significantly streamlining user interactions. This vision would shift the focus from user-centric app navigation to an AI-driven interface, minimising reliance on typical human navigational inputs.
While Pei acknowledged that apps will not disappear overnight—his company’s operating system currently allows users to create mini-apps—he stresses the need for AI to interact with applications more seamlessly. The objective is to create a dedicated interface for AI agents, designed not to mimic human interaction but to enhance efficiency and user experience.
In essence, Pei’s ambitious forecasts for a future-oriented smartphone promise a transformative approach to technology, where AI agents will not just assist but proactively manage user needs through intelligent automation.
