In a significant legal victory for Anthropic, a federal judge has intervened in its ongoing dispute with the Trump administration, issuing an injunction against a recent government designation that classified the company as a “supply-chain risk.” Judge Rita F. Lin, presiding in the Northern District of California, ordered the administration to revoke its security risk label, which had called for federal agencies to sever ties with the AI firm.
During court proceedings, Judge Lin suggested that the government’s efforts appeared to be an attempt to undermine Anthropic, pointing out that they might violate the company’s free speech rights. The conflicts between Anthropic and the Pentagon arose following the company’s attempts to impose limitations on how its AI technology could be used by the government. Specifically, Anthropic sought restrictions on the application of its AI models in autonomous weaponry and mass surveillance. The Trump administration contested these limitations, leading to the controversial designations typically reserved for foreign entities.
Furthermore, President Trump ordered federal bodies to detach from the company, intensifying the legal skirmish. In response, Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the government, asserting its position against what it deemed retaliatory actions.
The White House has intensified criticism of Anthropic, branding it a “radical-left, woke company,” and accusing it of posing risks to national security. In contrast, Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, has described the Defence Department’s maneuvers as retaliatory.
Following Judge Lin’s ruling, Anthropic expressed gratitude for the prompt decision, indicating that it strengthens their case and underscores their commitment to developing safe and reliable AI technologies in collaboration with the government for the benefit of all Americans.
TechCrunch has sought comments from the White House regarding this matter, indicating the ongoing nature of the political and legal dialogue surrounding Anthropic and its operations.
