Mastodon, the decentralised social networking platform, is undergoing significant enhancements aimed at attracting mainstream users seeking alternatives to popular platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Threads. The company recently announced a redesign of user profiles to create a more appealing experience for both individuals and organisations.
Since gaining visibility following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, Mastodon has drawn users seeking a decentralised environment where control over algorithms is not held by a single entity. However, the complexities of selecting a server, navigating local and federated timelines, and following others have made Mastodon less accessible for newcomers. As a result, monthly active users have dropped to approximately 800,000 from a peak of one million during the Twitter turmoil.
To address user concerns, Mastodon has streamlined the onboarding process and introduced features like Quote Posts and starter Collections. The latest updates focus on user profiles, overhauling their design and functionality. The platform now combines “posts” and “replies” into a single “Activity” tab, allowing users to filter posts with hashtags prominently displayed at the top. Additionally, the cumbersome pinned posts carousel has been replaced with a single featured post, with a button for viewing others.
Recognising the confusion surrounding Mastodon handles, which incorporate both user and server names, an informative pop-up has been introduced. Users can now tailor the visibility of profile features, such as the “Media” or “Featured” tabs, or hide replies to showcase their work.
The layout of custom fields has been enhanced, displaying information like links and pronouns side by side, and these details can now be edited on mobile devices. Other design alterations aim to declutter profiles, including the removal of the “following you” badge and the relocation of personal notes to an overflow menu.
Profile editing has been centralised within account settings, simplifying the management of features such as suggested hashtags and links. Improvements to link verification methods now allow users to establish credibility without requiring centralised oversight. Additionally, users can now add alt text to their profile and cover images, enhancing accessibility.
These updates are set to launch initially on the mastodon.social server, with broader availability expected when the Mastodon 4.6 update is rolled out in the coming weeks. Through these enhancements, Mastodon aims to create a more user-friendly experience and encourage engagement among both current and potential users.
