The recently launched Surf app from Flipboard is revolutionising how users engage with social media by enabling them to create custom feeds centred on their personal interests. Departing from the restrictive, algorithm-driven timelines associated with traditional social networks, Surf offers an alternative where users can curate content related to hobbies, sports, communities, and other preferred topics.
With the introduction of “Starter Sets,” Surf simplifies the feed-building process, ensuring that even those unfamiliar with such technology can easily create and personalise their feeds. This feature is particularly appealing to users looking to gain control over their social media experience, potentially countering the dominance of well-known platforms like Meta and Google. While other startups like Graze and SkyFeed have offered similar services, their tools cater primarily to more technically savvy users, leaving the general public needing a more accessible solution.
The Starter Sets are designed for ease of use, providing pre-populated categories to help newcomers start their feed journey. For example, selecting a “Hobbies” feed allows users to explore various subtopics such as cycling, gaming, baking, and more. This versatility empowers users to not just follow but actively curate the content they wish to see.
Initially launched in an invite-only beta late last year, Surf represents the next phase of Flipboard’s mission. The original Flipboard app allowed users to compile posts from various sources into custom magazines. However, as access to content from popular social services like X became restricted, Flipboard pivoted to create Surf, which focuses on the open social web. This new app integrates content from platforms built on open protocols such as Bluesky, Mastodon, and various blogs, podcasts, YouTube channels, and more.
In addition to building custom feeds from existing sources, Surf includes features for users to add their own social accounts and filter content by topics. This is particularly useful for individuals keen on tracking specific subjects without the distraction of unrelated posts. Furthermore, the app now allows users to publish their custom feeds directly to Bluesky, enhancing its functionality.
As the app continues to develop, it remains invite-only but is gradually expanding its user base from a waitlist. Overall, Surf seeks to empower users to curate a social media experience that is truly reflective of their interests.
