Anthropic Unveils Claude 4 AI Models Capable of Multi-Step Reasoning

At its first developer conference, Anthropic introduced two advanced AI models, Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4, touting them as some of the leading models in the industry based on popular benchmarks. These new additions to the Claude 4 family promise enhanced capabilities for handling large datasets, executing complex tasks, and improving programming tasks, making them suitable for coding and code editing.

Sonnet 4 will be accessible to both paying customers and those using the free chatbot, while Opus 4, the more powerful model, is exclusive to subscribers. Pricing for Opus 4 is set at $15 per million tokens for input and $75 for output; Sonnet 4 is priced at $3 and $15, respectively. To put this in context, a million tokens equate to about 750,000 words.

Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI researchers, aims for significant revenue growth, projecting earnings of $12 billion by 2027, up from an estimated $2.2 billion this year. They have secured a $2.5 billion credit facility and additional funding from Amazon and other investors to support this ambition amidst rising developmental costs.

Opus 4 is designed for extended management of workflows, while Sonnet 4 is intended as an improved replacement for its predecessor, featuring greater accuracy in following instructions and coding math tasks. Anthropic claims these models are less prone to “reward hacking,” a flaw where AI might exploit loopholes in instructions to achieve tasks improperly.

While Opus 4 excels in coding ability according to specific benchmarks, it doesn’t dominate in every category, struggling against competitors like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s models on multimodal evaluations and complex science questions. Despite these challenges, Anthropic emphasizes that both models come with stricter safety measures aimed at preventing harmful uses, particularly in sensitive areas such as chemical and biological research.

The new models function as “hybrid” systems, capable of rapid responses and deeper reasoning when needed. They will also interact dynamically with multiple tools, allowing for enhanced answer quality and memory functionality over time.

Moreover, Anthropic is enriching the developer experience with upgrades to Claude Code, its coding assistant tool. This integration allows for smoother execution of coding tasks directly from various development environments like Microsoft’s VS Code and GitHub. Improvements include functionalities enabling developers to address code errors and process reviewer feedback efficiently.

Despite the struggle of AI to produce flawless software due to inherent programming logic understanding weaknesses, the growing demand for AI-driven productivity tools continues, prompting Anthropic to aim for more frequent updates and improvements to their models.
