Jony Ive, the renowned designer behind many iconic Apple products, is set to take on a significant role at OpenAI, focusing on creative and design initiatives. This collaboration was revealed on Wednesday and stems from approximately two years of partnership between Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, aimed at developing an innovative AI device designed to transcend traditional screen interfaces, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Altman expressed his excitement on social media, referring to Ive as “the greatest designer in the world” and voicing his enthusiasm for creating a new generation of AI-driven computers.
As part of this partnership, OpenAI is acquiring an all-equity stake in a joint venture called io, which was co-founded by Altman and Ive and has a current valuation of $6.5 billion. OpenAI previously owned a 23% share in the venture. Io comprises a team of approximately 55 professionals, including engineers, scientists, researchers, and product developers, who will now integrate into OpenAI. Despite this shift, Ive will maintain leadership of his design firm, LoveFrom, which will continue to function independently.
This collaboration places Ive in a pivotal role within the booming generative AI sector. Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, OpenAI has significantly expanded its consumer-facing operations, recently appointing former Meta executive and Instacart CEO Fidji Simo to spearhead its consumer applications. If OpenAI decides to release a consumer hardware product, Ives’ expertise will position the company to rival Apple’s existing hardware offerings.
Under the OpenAI umbrella, io will focus on developing AI-infused consumer devices and other innovative projects. Reports indicate that Ive will play a vital role in shaping the future of ChatGPT and various other initiatives.
Earlier discussions around OpenAI’s potential acquisition of io were initially highlighted in March, with plans to create a device reminiscent of technologies showcased in the film “Her.” As OpenAI and Ive move forward, their combined efforts are anticipated to lead to groundbreaking advancements in AI technology that could redefine technical interactions for consumers.
