During Google I/O 2025, the tech giant announced a significant partnership with the eyewear company Warby Parker, pledging up to $150 million to collaboratively create AI-enhanced smart glasses featuring Android XR technology.
Initially, Google has invested $75 million to support Warby Parker’s product development and commercialisation. An additional $75 million investment is contingent on the eyewear company meeting specific performance milestones, which would also secure Google an equity stake in Warby Parker.
Alongside this partnership, Google revealed collaborations with other companies, such as Samsung and Gentle Monster, to further advance smart glasses equipped with Gemini AI and augmented reality (AR) functionalities.
This strategy echoes the approach taken by Meta, which has successfully partnered with EssilorLuxottica, the company behind Ray-Ban, to develop smart glasses. Meta’s success can be largely attributed to the stylish designs of the glasses and their availability in Ray-Ban retail outlets. Likewise, Google’s collaboration with Warby Parker is expected to leverage the brand’s trendy eyewear designs and retail presence, enhancing market appeal.
Both companies indicated in their press release that they plan to introduce a range of products, with the initial collection slated for launch post-2025. This first series will merge multimodal AI technology with options for both prescription and non-prescription eyewear, marking a notable advancement in smart eyewear capabilities.
Overall, this partnership aims to redefine the eyewear market by integrating cutting-edge technology and design, showcasing Google’s commitment to innovation in the wearables sector.
