The New Google Gemma AI Model Now Capable of Operating on Mobile Devices

by admin

Google’s suite of “open” AI models, known as Gemma, is expanding with the introduction of Gemma 3n at the Google I/O 2025 event. This new model is optimised for seamless operation across smartphones, laptops, and tablets, and it is available for preview from Tuesday. The capabilities of Gemma 3n span audio, text, images, and video processing.

In recent years, there has been a significant shift in the AI sector towards models that can operate offline without relying on cloud computing. These models offer a more affordable solution than larger counterparts, while also enhancing user privacy by avoiding data transmission to remote servers.

Alongside Gemma 3n, Google is also launching MedGemma through its Health AI Developer Foundations initiative. This model is touted as the most advanced open platform for interpreting both health-related texts and images.

Looking ahead, Google plans to introduce SignGemma, an open model aimed at converting sign language into spoken language text, thereby providing developers the tools to create new applications for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Despite some criticisms regarding its custom licensing terms, which some developers have noted can complicate commercial use, Gemma has seen widespread adoption, with millions of downloads collectively. This interest suggests that developers are eager to leverage these models, underscoring the growing importance and utility of open AI technologies in various fields.
