At the Google I/O 2025 event, Google unveiled significant updates to Wear OS 6, featuring a design overhaul rooted in its new Material 3 Expressive design language. This revamped operating system, built on Android 16, is aimed at enhancing the aesthetics of apps and ensuring a more cohesive experience for users.
Developers can now access the Wear OS 6 developer preview, which includes features like a standardized system font for app tiles and a dynamic theming library. This library allows apps to adapt their colour schemes to align with the user’s chosen watch face on Pixel devices, promoting visual harmony across the platform.
The redesigned user interface encourages more extensive customisation options for developers, utilising new design guidelines and Figma design files for reference. Additionally, Google introduced Wear Compose Material 3 and Wear Protolayout libraries, which provide an expanded palette of colours, typography, and shapes, resulting in more visually engaging applications.
To create a uniform appearance on various screen sizes, Wear OS 6 features a three-slot tile layout designed for circular displays. This layout incorporates a title area, a main content section, and a bottom slot, facilitating a seamless transition between different watch sizes. Alongside this, Google has rolled out new components such as buttons and progress indicators, optimised for circular screens. Developers can implement different scrolling behaviours where components dynamically scale based on their position on the screen.
Wear OS 6 also enhances the watch face customisation experience, enabling animated transitions between ambient and interactive states, as well as new options for photo watch faces. A new API will facilitate the creation of watch marketplaces, allowing users to further personalise their devices.
The update introduces a CredentialManager API to Wear OS for Pixel Watches, an advance that enables secure passkey authentication via the device. Furthermore, Wear OS 5.1 will feature enriched media controls, providing users with capabilities to navigate podcasts more intuitively, as well as a new controls menu integrating playlist management tools like shuffle and repeat.
