Microsoft Unveils Open-Source Command-Line Text Editor and More at Build Event

by admin

At the Build 2025 conference, Microsoft announced the open-sourcing of several applications and tools, notably introducing a new command-line text editor for Windows named Edit.

Although open-source software does not directly generate income for Microsoft, it offers significant advantages. It acts as a valuable market research tool and can attract users towards paid offerings. By engaging with the open-source community, Microsoft collects essential insights, product feedback, and innovative ideas for future product development.

The new Edit text editor will be integrated by default into Windows, starting this summer via the Windows Insider Program. This tool is designed specifically for developers, enabling them to edit files directly within the command line using the “edit” command. Microsoft aims to reduce unnecessary context switching, allowing developers to maintain their workflow more seamlessly.

In addition to Edit, Microsoft will open-source the GitHub Copilot extension for Visual Studio Code, enhancing its assistive coding functionality. Over the next few months, AI features from GitHub Copilot will transition into the open-source repository of VS Code, broadening access to these advanced coding aids.

Furthermore, the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)—a feature permitting users to run a Linux environment natively on Windows—will also be made open-source. This change will give developers the opportunity to modify the source code to better suit their specific needs.

Through these initiatives, Microsoft continues to bolster its commitment to open-source development, engaging a wider community and fostering innovation within its software ecosystem.
