As the NBA playoffs continue, Bluesky has revealed that it is beta testing a new feature tailored for sports enthusiasts. During live games, posts from the NBA’s account will feature a red border labelled “live,” allowing users to easily identify real-time updates. By clicking on the NBA’s profile image, users will be directed to the event the NBA is promoting, even if it requires leaving the Bluesky platform.
Rose Wang, Bluesky’s COO, emphasised the platform’s intention to enhance user experience rather than restrict it, stating, “We aren’t trapping you in Bluesky. We want you to use Bluesky to discover what’s happening.” This approach contrasts with previous attempts by Twitter to integrate live sports within its app, where substantial investments were made to secure streaming rights.
Unlike Twitter, Bluesky is supported by venture capital funding and does not depend on advertising revenue. This allows the platform to avoid the financial burden of securing streaming rights for live events. Instead, its focus is on creating an engaging environment that keeps users returning, even if that means navigating them to external sites for streaming games.
In addition to NBA games, Wang has confirmed that this feature will also extend to WNBA games. This decision reflects Bluesky’s strategy of enhancing its offering for sports fans, recognising the significant role that platforms like Twitter have played in real-time sports discussions. While some fans have begun migrating to Bluesky, many remain hesitant to leave platforms that currently facilitate broader conversations around major sports events.
Investing in functionalities that cater to sports aficionados seems a prudent move for Bluesky. It positions the platform as a useful tool for real-time engagement during games, responding to the established culture of sports discussions that thrive on platforms like Twitter.
